NEWS FLASH: BATFLECK RETURNS
He’s baaaaaaaack!
Vanity Fair are reporting that Ben Affleck will don the Cape and Cowl once again in the upcoming The Flash movie.
Affleck will only be returning for The Flash movie which stars Ezra Miller and is directed by It and It: Chapter Two director Andy Muschietti.
Muschietti said, “The interaction and relationship between Barry and Affleck’s Wayne will bring an emotional level that we haven’t seen before”
The Flash movie will be an interpretation of the Flashpoint comic book storyline where The Flash back in time, preventing his mother’s death and altering reality.
The movie version will be less time travel focused and see The Flash travel to through the DC Multiverse, something teased in the DCTV event, Crisis on Infinite Earths.
Affleck joins Michael Keaton who is also returning as his Caped Crusader from the Tim Burton films, in what will be another universe that The Flash visits.
Muschietti revealed that this is the reason for Affleck’s return as, “He’s the baseline. He’s part of that unaltered state before we jump into Barry’s adventure,”
The report is that Affleck’s appearance will not be replacing Robert Pattinson’s Batman film.
This could be Warner Media’s chance to soft reboot the DC franchise from the Snyder beginnings and continue on with a mix of returning stars (Gal Gadot, Jason Mamoa, etc.) and new versions like Robert Pattinson in the same universe/timeline/thing.
This Multiverse approach can work in DC/Warner Media’s favour as a point of difference from Marvel with its rigid universe that is hard to enter without having seen all the prior films.
Instead, DC could allow for any number of takes on their characters to exist simultaneously in the Multiverse which means audiences can watch the movies they want and not be bogged down with multiple films story’s.
The Flash is written by Christina Hodson (Birds of Prey), directed by Andy Muschietti and stars Ezra Miller and is set to be released 2nd June, 2022.
