NEWS FLASH: GOTHAM KNIGHTS GAME
Gotham Knights
Warner Bros Games Montreal’s next game is going to be Gotham Knights.
The studio behind Batman: Arkham Origins showed-off a cinematic story trailer and some pre-Alpha gameplay footage.
Batgirl, Nightwing, Red Robin and Red Hood will all be playable characters in a Gotham where Bruce Wayne has been killed in an explosion and leaving the protection of Gotham up to Batman’s Bat family.
The cinematic shows each of the heroes receiving the news of Bruce’s death before receiving a post-mortem video from Bruce passing over the mantle of Gotham’s protectors to the four of them.
The end of the cinematic saw the confirmation that the Court of Owls and Talon, created by Scott Snyder for his New 52 Batman run, will be the main villains for the game.
The developers of the game teased that there is going to be a bigger mystery than the Court, whatever that could mean.
Following on from that, they showed off some gameplay footage of Batgirl and Red Robin trying to stop Mr. Freeze from doing his regular thing of freezing over Gotham City.
The gameplay showed off Batgirl’s hand-to-hand combat and baton as well as Red Robin’s ability to teleport using the Justice League's satellite and take care of enemies that way.
One of the big takeaways is that the game is multiplayer, but only online with only 2-player co-op which is at least one more than Rocksteady’s Arkham series.
Another new feature is the combat which looks more like an RPG with enemies having levels and health meters, instead of the uniform grunts in the Rocksteady series.
The rest of the gameplay is familiar with Batgirl riding on a Batcycle much like the Batmobile; the countering combat and various gadgets including the grapple hook to traverse the world and take out enemies stealthily.
The developers said that the 3 things they focused on with making the game was: having a cast of playable characters; making Gotham a living, breathing world and allowing for co-op play.
It is appears the game is not a sequel to Arkham Knights because of Jim Gordon's death and the existence of the Justice League.
Gotham Knights is out in 2021 on all platforms.
