It’s time to return to The Grid as Disney are working on a new TRON film, 10 years after the last film, TRON: Legacy.

Australian director, Garth Davis (Lion, Top of the Lake) will helm the project with Jared Leto set to star.

Jared Leto confirmed the project’s existence and his involvement on Twitter, saying “We have some very special ideas in store for you all”.

There have been rumours of a TRON 3 for years, with TRON: Legacy director, Joseph Kosinski (Oblivion, upcoming Top Gun: Maverick), and Garrett Hedlund and Olivia Wilde set to return, and Jared Leto also appearing in it.

In May 2015, The Hollywood Reporter revealed that Disney were not continuing with the three-quel.

Garrett Hedlund, who played Legacy’s protagonist Sam, said on the Happy Sad Confused podcast at the time, that the box office disappointment of Brad Bird’s Tomorrowland made Disney cautious about a TRON 3.

Joseph Kosinski put the rumours to rest in 2017, saying to Collider the film was “alive, but it’s sitting there, waiting for the right time to move forward”.

TRON: Legacy, a sequel to 1982 TRON, was not a runaway hit upon release with 51% critic average on Rotten Tomatoes and earning $400 million worldwide on a budget of $170 million.

However, over time the film has developed a cult following and an appreciation for French DJ duo, Daft Punk’s unique score and the stunning, neon drench visuals and ambitious, early attempt at the de-ageing effect used in many Marvel movies.

While work on TRON 3 has only just begun, the fact that Jared Leto is still attached after all this time, could indicate that Disney haven’t completely scrapped the previous ideas.
