REEL NEWS: Pixar release 1st trailer for new movie Luca

The home of animation that makes you cry, Pixar, have released the first trailer for their next project, Luca.

Luca follows the story of a young boy and his summer spent in an Italian coastal town. Oh and he’s a merman.

The trailer shows off a vibrant, sun-soaked movie with the gorgeous animation that Pixar has prided itself, with humour and story that has an all-ages appeal.

Initially, the concept was compared to Luca Guadagnino’s film Call Me By Your Name which starred Timothée Chalamet and Armie Hanniba-I mean Hammer.

Call Me By Your Name is also about a young boy and a formative summer spent in the Italian countryside involving an older man.

After this trailer though, the movie looks more like a combination of Call Me By Your Name and Guillermo del Toro’s Best Picture winner, The Shape of Water.

The Shape of Water is a romantic twist on the sea monster story with a cleaner at a government facility befriending and falling in love with a fish-man imprisoned there.

The fact that Luca is similar to two award recognised films should be an indicator for the filmmaking quality involved.

Pixar’s back catalogue of films would also attest to the care they put into each project in delivering animated films that everyone can enjoy and tackle meaningful themes and morals.

Recently, Pixar pulled at the heart strings with Soul, a family that explores death, life and passion in a nuanced and mature level beyond most “kids” movies.

Luca is set to be released June 18th, in theatres, if the trailer is to be believed.

There is still a chance it could be a simultaneous Disney+ and theatrical release like with Mulan, Soul and the newest Disney animated film Raya and The Last Dragon, which is coming out March 4th.
